Celluloid Sex

I’m participating in Samahin’s e book appreciation week and will be taking control of the Samhain Café chat on March 11 from 5-6pm US time (7-8am March 12 Oz time). I’m also blogging at TRS Blue on March 12 US time, so it’s a mini media blitz. I didn’t plan it this way, so imagine my surprise when the reminders popped up in my outlook!

I’m be running a competition over the next few days. Anyone who comments on this post will be in the running to win a free e-book, your choice of any of my titles. I’ll announce the winner here and in the Samhain Café on the weekend.

I’m triangulating on this topic of favorite movie sex scenes. Or love scenes, if you prefer to call them that :). Here’s my top five list – what do you think I’ve missed?

1. An Officer and a Gentleman – If you’ve read this blog before you already know I have a Richard Gere thing. It’s not a stalker thing, honestly. I just think he’s sooooo cute and sexy and I could eat him with a big ol’ spoon. And this is probably my favourite of all his movies. The scenes between him and Debra Winger were so steamy it proves the only thing better than a man in uniform is a man out of one.

2. The Big Easy – I love the mood of this movie. The sultry atmosphere, the southern accents… and Denis Quaid’s abs aren’t bad either. There’s a scene when he’s seducing Ellen Barkin and he tells her that things are done nice and slow in the big easy that makes me want to hope a plane and go there. And not just for the Gumbo.

3. Bull Durham – Kevin Costner and Susan Sarandon put some interesting visuals to the musical lyrics ‘Sixty Minute Man’. There’s actually no nudity, only very strong suggestion of what’s going on. Is there such a thing as explicit suggestiveness? Who can forget the bath water sloshing over the side of the tub, or Kevin tying Susan up to… paint her toenails. Now that’s a pedicure.

4. Unfaithful – When I first heard about this movie I didn’t get it. The character played by Diane Lane is married to a character played by Richard Gere. My Richard Gere thing raises it’s head again. How could anyone cheat on him? Then I saw the movie and I got it. The picture pretty much says it all.

5. Titanic -- whatever you or I might say about the movie, i.e. that it’s a tad long and a manipulative tear jerker, that scene in the car is damn memorable. Kate Winslet’s hand sliding down the window, all that panting. It’s pretty sexy and made the three hours I spent at the
cinema worthwhile—if not the experience of that song. My poor, poor ears.

  1. OMG! I can't think of one fave love scene!
    I like your picks though.
I'll try and pop into the cafe to chat with you but as I'm two hours behind you.... it's a bit early for me.

  2. Hey Sami
Okay - you and me? Veeeery different taste! These ones you've mentioned? Well... Meh.

As with RC, I cannot think of a love scene I adore off the top of my head. (Sure I'll come up with loads in a couple of hours tho.)

  3. As soon as I heard Favorite Sex Scenes I immediately thought of Titanic. As you already had that one noted, then I would have to say...um...let me think. The movie Wild Things had a pretty hot and heavy scene as well as the second Matrix movie. I think one of the funniest, almost sex scenes, would have to be Robin Hood: Men in Tights. That movie is hilarious.

  5. Great question. How about the movie Secretary with James Spader and Maggie Gyllenhaal? So intense. And the phone sex scene in The Truth About Cats and Dogs with Janeane Garofalo and Ben Chaplin. And the love scene in the French movie Amelie with Audrey Tautou and Mathieu Kassovitz.

  6. @ loves2read: I'll have to check out Men in Tights again, I can't remember that scene! But I love funny scenes as much as steamy ones. The 40 Year old Virgin springs to mind.

@ brooks: I love that scene from Cats and Dogs! I've never seen Secretary but I think I'll have to go rent it.

  7. Taking Lives.
Angelina Jolie opens the door and lets Ethen Hawke in. They go at it on the entryway table. OMG HOT.

  8. Sami, just fyi about Secretary, it's a pretty intense movie about a S&M relationship. I thought it was done quite well. A very different type of love story.

  9. I can't think of any sex scenes that I adore off the top of my head. Right now, the only one that comes to mind is the almost sex scene between Sarah and Karl in Love Actually.

  12. Yes I know the outline of Secretary. It's one of those movies I keep meaning to see but have to know when the kids won't be about! I love James Spader, there's a certain nerdy moodiness about him that has always appealed. I also liked Sex Lies and Videotape.

Karin - I can't remember which ones are Sarah and Karl. The couple who were stand ins for the porn film? That was so funny!

  13. Sami, I must have been watching my movies in a different era because they were more romance then sex scenes. My favorites were Gone With The Wind with Clark Gable, Pretty Woman with Richare Gere, and Patrick Swayze with both Dirty Dancing and Road House.

  14. Sexual tension counts as sex Sandie, at least I thinks so. I thought of GWTW, that part where he sweeps her up the stairs in her red velvet dress is very memorable! Dirty Dancing is also one of my favs

  15. We seem to enjoy the same movies Sami. Maybe that's why we likes the same heros. I loved the GWTW quote of Clark Gable saying "Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn."

  16. Yes, it's a classic. I think I'll do a top five movie one liners soon. That would have to be in there. Along with the procratistinater's catch cry, 'tomorrow is another day'.
