Blame the Dog

This is a bit how I feel after working on a book only to find out it's not working;

"An 86-year-old UK man who spent eight years working on a massive jigsaw puzzle has been horrified to discover a single piece is missing.

I could use that in future... sorry my manuscript sucks Ms. Editor, but the dog ate my premise.
