Word for Wednesday

Word of the day:

mo·nopo·ly

Exclusive control of a commodity or service in a given market, or control that makes possible the fixing of prices and the virtual elimination of free competition i.e. a company or combination that has a monopoly

A game played on a special board by two or more players: they move according to the throw of dice, engaging in mock real estate transactions with play money

And in unrelated news, Amazon has 'an agreement to acquire the fast-growing UK-based The Book Depository, for undisclosed terms'.

The deal is subject to regulatory approval and the UK's Office of Fair Trading has officially invited comment on whether it "may be expected to result in a substantial lessening of competition within any market or markets in the United Kingdom."  (source: publishers lunch)

The Book Depository has been quick to reassure customers that nothing will change at the customer service level. We'll see. If I lose my free postage I'll mess someone up real bad. Maybe that smug little shit in the top hat.

  2. Amazon doesn't always let us buy the books we want in Oz because of geographical restrictions and the postage can be prohibitive. The Book Depository has been a fantastic alternative. Hope it remains that way.
